For The Love of Champagne

October 30, 2008

As you know if you follow my blogs, Facebook page, Twitter, or have ever met me, I love champagne!

Last week, I was in San Francisco and when in San Fran one must take a little detour to Napa. I think I could spend a week or more in Napa alone. This visit to Napa, Joe and I visited Mumm Napa. When I visited Champagne region I didn’t get the chance to visit Mumm and last Napa visit we did tastings at Chandon. For me, no wine region tasting day is complete without a sparkling tasting so Mumm selected as a visit.

We elected to taste the Brut Classic trio of sparkling wines. All three were very good. When Joe was walking through the facility he noticed a quote by Napoleon. Now after having done a little investigating I’m not sure whether he read the quote correctly or whether it was correctly quoted but here are two quotes which capture what he read:

“I drink Champagne when I win, to celebrate…and I drink Champagne when I lose, to console myself.” – Napoleon Bonaparte

“In victory we deserve it, in defeat we need it.” – Winston Churchill

Here are a few more which I also found and appreciated:

Remember gentlemen, it’s not just France we are fighting for, it’s Champagne! ~ Winston Churchill, WWI

Come quickly, I am tasting the stars! ~ Dom Perignon, at the moment he discovered champagne

I drink champagne when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I’m not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it – unless I’m thirsty. ~ Madame Lilly Bollinger

“Champagne makes you feel like it’s Sunday and better days are just around the corner.” – Marlene Dietrich

“My only regret in life is that I did not drink more Champagne.” – John Meynard Keynes

“Two warm bodies and one cold bottle of Champagne will produce something more wonderful than would happen without the Champagne.” – Helen Gurley Brown

“Too much of anything is bad, but too much Champagne is just right.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald

“One holds a bottle of red wine by the neck, a woman by the waist, and a bottle of Champagne by the derriere.” – Mark Twain

Mountain Home Inn – Mill Valley CA

October 24, 2008

On the weekend Joe and I had planned to go to the Muir Woods just north of San Fran across the Golden Gate Bridge however when we arrived at the woods the parking lots were full! With Joe’s knee injury it wasn’t really feasible to park really far away from the entrance. By the time we’d get to the entrance he would have been done.

We decided to skip the woods in favour of a drive up to Mount Tamalpais. Funny when we arrive the entrance was closed too. Anyway making lemon aid from lemons we decided to stop at a lovely little inn which overlooks the valley for a light lunch.

The inn, Mountain Home Inn, has a wonderful wood deck overlooking the valley and since the weather was fabulous we couldn’t think of a better place to relax and have a bite to eat. We didn’t have high expectations however of the food. You know how these places usually are, you pay for the view not necessarily the food.

Joe and I shared a pulled pork sandwich and I had a glass of organic cranberry juice. To my pleasant surprise, the juice, I know it’s just juice, was amazing. The sandwich too was delicious and served with fresh cut fries and a fresh made coleslaw. It always surprises me how good simple food can taste when made with fresh ingredients.

The service too was great. I would highly recommend a visit if you are in the area, great place to take pleasure in the beautiful view.

Daniel Merriam Fantasy Artist

October 23, 2008

Last weekend, before getting stuck in the hotel room, Joe and I made our way to Sausalito for a stroll. The weather was fantastic so a perfect day for a little window shopping. We visited a gallery – Hanson Gallery and discovered an amazing artist – Daniel Merriam.

I had never heard of this artist before but he is amazing! His work takes you into a beautiful fantasy world. My particular favourite painting is the Sea Blossom, see below. I encourage you to check out his work by visiting his site – Daniel Merriam – and/or one of the galleries who feature his work. And on top of it, Mr Merriam is pretty cute!

Third Straight Day of Hotel Room

October 23, 2008

This is my third straight day of being stuck in my hotel room trying to fix/resolve issues with web hosting. So if you are trying to access my website and get an error message, I have a wonderful hosting company to thank for that! Fingers crossed, lucky pennies in hand, hopefully it will be resolved very, very soon.

Imagine being in beautiful San Francisco and being stuck in a hotel?!? Also the fact that I have a feature in InStyle Magazine makes the timing even worse.

Hopefully all will be worked out for tomorrow as a trip to Napa is planned, will definitely appreciate the wine!

Supporting Entrepreneurs In Developing Markets

October 20, 2008

Hello Everyone,

Today when checking my Facebook page, I noticed a notification from Opportunity International. Opportunity International has just launched a new site called OptINnow.

Opportunity International, as you may know is one of my favourite organisastions. They are a micro finance organisation and help support struggling entrepreneurs in the developing world.

Pangea Collection supports their effort and in particular offers $1 donation for fair trade month with the inclusion of “fair trade” in the shopping cart and items start at just $20.

This new site, OptInNow is similar to that of Kiva’s site. Visitors can select an entrepreneur that they want to support and lend them the money. I think this is such a great way to connect directly with those that you are supporting. Please check out the site and consider supporting one of the entrepreneurs. Keep in mind that the site is new and there are not yet that many entrepreneurs listed.

Movie Review – Amal

October 17, 2008

Yesterday I was flying between Toronto and San Francisco and when flying I love to watch foreign films, ones that I wouldn’t normally have access too.

On the flight yesterday I watched a film by a Canadian (so guess it’s not foreign to me) called Amal. It was a wonderful film and I’d like to share the title with you so you can seek it out.

The film is a story about a rickshaw driver (named Amal) in India who finds himself in a situation where he feels responsible for something that was actually an accident but was caused by his action. He feels guilty for creating the situation and tries everything to make it better. He is highly honorable when those around him are not. As a result of his honesty someone whom he does not know offers to give him something as a recognition, he is oblivious to this offer as a result of his inability to read.

That’s the best I can do without sharing the details, it’s a lovely movie and give you some insight into Indian culture.

Cheers

WNetwork Expert Contest

October 16, 2008

Hello Everyone, I entered the WNetwork Expert contest. Here is the link to my submission. If you think it’s interesting please leave a comment and/or rate it.

One caveat, I did this totally last minute so the execution is not fab but the angle (if I do say so myself) is an interesting one. Hope you will think so too. Let’s move beyond just fab to fab and socially conscious.
