Favourite Museums

May 31, 2008

Here is a list of my favourite museums around the world:

Pompidou, Paris, France
One of my favourite things to do in Paris on a Sunday is to stroll the streets of the Marais (as you may know if you read my previous post on Paris) and then a visit to the nearby Pompidou in the Beaubourg area. The Pompidou is my favourite museum in Paris.

While the Pompidou is huge the exhibits are broken into specific rooms so you can see just the exhibits you are most interested in without being overwhelmed.

If you have time, go all the way up to the top to George (restaurant) it is an amazing view and if the weather is nice, have a coupe or glass of wine there, don’t bother with the food though, a bit pricey and not really worth it. There are a lot of cafes in the area (even a Starbucks!). http://www.centrepompidou.fr

L’Orangerie, Paris, France
L’orangerie which just reopened in 2006 after a four year renovation is not to be missed. It is a stunning exhibit of Monet’s water lilies. He painted them specifically for this space (it’s an infinity room). The 17 metre paintings brought tears to my eyes. http://www.musee-orangerie.fr

Marmottan Monet, Paris, France
If you are a Monet fan, there is another museum which is a little out of the way but well worth the effort. It’s called the Marmottan Monet. This museum is really dedicated to Monet’s work and there are so many large pieces of his work, they’re fantastic. Go to the lower level. Take a seat in one of the rooms and admire the work.

Albertina, Vienna, Austria

There is a new permanent exhibition here called Monet to Picasso (actually not the best name for the exhibition as it covers many different art styles), it is really amazing! Head set is a must.

MOMA, New York City, USA
I love this museum, again huge but so great. I especially like the garden where you can see some of Picasso’s sculptures and even an original Paris Metro entrance.

The building is beautiful too, great open space. You will need a lot of time to see this museum.

Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
If you are a fan of Van Gogh, this is a must visit. The museum is dedicated to the artist and is well laid out.

Naïve Art Museum, Zegreb, Croatia
Admittedly this little museum would not make the top on many best of museum lists, however, I absolutely love this museum and the art style.

Leopold Museum, Vienna Austria
This is a must visit museum if you love the 1900 Viennese artists. Personally it is among my favourite styles so that’s why I love this museum so much.

If you have favourite museum, please send them along.

Sunday Shopping Outfit

May 22, 2008

Hello here is an outfit I created on Polyvore. I love that site! This one I’ve called Sunday Shopping.

It includes:
- An amazing pair of boots from Betsy Johnson (she’s not usually one of my favs but these boots are to die for!)
- A cute white top
- A pair of skinny jeans (yeah I know, I’ll do another one with trouser jeans but that wouldn’t work with these boots)
- A cross the body bag, with just enough space for that all important credit card. The cross the body bag is really important for shopping, it leaves your arms free and your bag secure!
- New Pangea Collection Fair Trade Indian Camel bone Necklace, oh I love this piece
- Fair Trade Ecuadorian Tagua Seed Bracelet

Inspired by the fashions in “Shampoo”

May 20, 2008

A few weeks ago late at night I was flipping channels and came across an old movie, Shampoo set in 1968 starring Goldie Hawn and Warren Beatty.

I was immediately drawn to Goldie’s character, Jill’s fashions. How cool are those short dresses and gogo boots! I want to wear that outfit!

This is the closest image to the look I could find. Amazing!

New Collection – Uganda Eco Jewelry

May 19, 2008

New Ugandan Artisan Jewelry Collection now posted on the Pangea Collection website.

Ugandan Collection

This Collection represents the bead and jewelry craft work of a group of over 20 women in various parts of Uganda. The women in the group are widows, single mothers or students.

For these women the unique handcrafted jewelry that they create as a part of this group is the primary or sole source of income. It provides them with a means to attain medical treatment and educate their children.

There are two different jewelry styles in the Collection, recycled paper bead jewelry and wood seed jewelry.

The recycled paper beads are made from old waste paper especially magazines and other paper of similar texture. To create the beads, the magazines are cut into appropriate widths and lengths depending on the intended finished bead size. The paper pieces are rolled onto a needle in order to maintain a simple hole. As the paper is rolled onto the needle it is glued to make a tightly rolled bead. The beads are dipped in varnish and hung to dry in the sun to provide a pretty polished finish. It takes three days to create the beads from beginning to finished bead. A typical jewelry artisan can assemble 20 necklaces in a day.

Mission Mom Update

May 16, 2008

Hello All,

I just wanted to let everyone know that together we raised enough money to send a cheque of $100 to Opportunity International as a result of the “Mission Mom” Mother’s Day project. As you know from previous posts $50 is enough to start a loan, so we’ve generated enough to start two loans. Plus right now the Canadian government CIDA is adding to every dollar raised 70 cents so in effect we raised $170!

Thanks for your support and for supporting Opportunity International, it just such a wonderful concept and organisation, I’m proud to be working with them.

There will be many opportunities in the future to contribute. I look forward to your ongoing support.

Have a wonderful weekend and if you are in Canada, Happy Victoria Day weekend!

Cheers
Patricia

Hire an Immigrant

May 13, 2008

Have you seen this television commercial which is set in India with the two men speaking with British accents talking about “an interesting chap he saw the other day”?

It is very funny, why because humour is based on insight. If you can identify with it, it rings true and it is likely that you will find it funny.

The ad does a great job of dramatising the real situation of how corporations speak of immigrant applicants. The best corporations recognise that having a diverse workforce is an advantage, those that don’t well lets see where they are in 10 years.

Happy Fair Trade and Mother’s Day

May 11, 2008

Happy Fair Trade Day – May 10th and Mother’s Day – May 11th. Let’s wish our mothers well and thank them for their never ending support and at the same time be thankful for the privilege that we have living where we do. We have abundance of food, water and shelter isn’t in question.

There are many mother’s around the world today who are not as luck, let’s not forget them. Consider a donation to Opportunity International, a micro finance organisation who gives the working poor a working chance through small loans and financial services.

Let’s also support fair trade organisations whenever possible, think about what coffee you buy, clothing, home accessories, jewellery etc. Let’s give those in the developing world a fair price for their work and ensure they have good working conditions.

Enjoy your weekend!
Cheers
Patricia

Trouser Jeans

May 6, 2008

I’ve fallen in love with Trouser jeans. After several years of wearing tighter stretch pants, it feels so good to pull on a pair of trouser jeans. The fit beautifully and you feel like you aren’t wearing anything at all. While I still like the way my backside looks in the stretch jeans, I love the looks you can create with trouser jeans.

If you buy a dark coloured pair you can dress them up or down. I like to pair mine with a blazer and wide wood bangles in bright colours as well as pairing it with a wood and ribbon necklace, gives you a touch of a safari look without over doing it.
