Five Reasons To Love San Francisco

February 29, 2008

I love this city! Here are my top five reasons:

1. The Boutiques
There are wonderful boutiques in this city, Grant, Polk, Union and Filmore street are amongst my favourites. As wonderful as the boutiques themselves are the owners. Everyone of them are genuinely friendly. I can’t think of a better way to spend an afternoon.

2. Architecture
From Victorian to Art Deco, this city has beautiful architecture everywhere, perfect for strolling and discovering different neighbourhoods.

3. The Views
Take a walk up the hills to get an amazing view of the hills on one side and the waterfront on the other. A great spot is from Pacific Heights, you can see the Golden Gate Bridge from there. The view is also stunning from the waterfront itself.

4. The Gluteus Maximus Effect
You only need to talk a walk up the hill to know what I mean! Wow, double bonus, views and tight…

5. Love of Dogs
I’m a dog lover so this city is for me. The people here love dogs and unlike our Parisian friends, they actually clean up after them!

If you get a chance, it’s a great place to spend a few days.

Compare Pangea Collection to Tiffany and Other Brand Prices

February 26, 2008

If you are following my blog you’ll know that I am in California this week. On the weekend I happened to walk into a Tiffany & Co store. I was curious to see what was in store and also wanted to do a little comparison shopping to see the value of what we are offering at Pangea Collection. Take a look at a couple comparisons below. You may be more than a little surprised.

I am completely in favour of high quality design and crafted pieces, and agree that the pieces at Tiffany deliver on these qualities. If the blue box is really important to you, Tiffany is an option. If however you’d rather support Fair Trade and small artisan groups from around the world with your purchases, read on. These featured Pangea Collection pieces are carefully crafted with pride and quality materials (925 Sterling Silver) by artisans from Thailand and Taxco Mexico.

Okay so while Pangea Collection doesn’t have the branded blue box, we do send your order in a pretty burgundy box with pink Pangea Collection ribbon and there is no charge for shipping. You be the judge on the value.

Take a look at these comparisons:

Pangea Collection’s Thai Mien Sterling Silver Ball Bracelet, $50.79

null

Click on the link below to see the Tiffany Bracelet $175
Tiffany & Co. Beaded Bracelet $175

Pangea Collection’s Sterling Silver Link Bracelet with Heart Pendant $41.05

null

Click on the link below to see the Tiffany Bracelet $270 USD
Tiffany & Co. Heart Charm Tag Toggle Bracelet $270 USD

Click on the link below to see a similar bracelet from Cathy B Jewelry
Cathy B Jewelry $495

Pangea Collection’s Sterling Silver Oval Link Bracelet $56.39

null

Tiffany & Co. Cushion Toggle Bracelet $350 USD

You can also compare the matching necklaces which are approx. $135 at Pangea Collection, compared to $525 USD at Tiffany. Again there are design differences between these styles, the question is whether that warrants, the price difference and if you’d rather buy from the big guy or a smaller business.

Love to hear your feedback.

Happy Exploring,
Patricia

Ethiquette

February 25, 2008

I discovered this wonderful site started in Montreal in one of the Daily Doses of Vitamin M’s. As a person in the fashion business, I try, as difficult as that is, to read everything that comes my way. Not everything in these trend letters strikes a cord with me but this lovely site did.

We all know that the environment is a hot topic these days and this site is dedicated to listing products which are produced with environmental practices and/or socially conscious practices.

Take a look at the site and support the companies and products which are listed there. You can even find one of Pangea Collection’s, jewelry collections, listed, the Napelese Artisan Jewelry Collection.

Tribal Influences & Trend Following

February 21, 2008

Wow everywhere I look these days I’m seeing Tribal Influences as the latest hottest fashion for Spring/Summer 2008. It’s in all the latest issues of fashion magazines, all of the trend magazines, everywhere.

If you have been coming to the Pangea Collection site since our launch last April you will know, while we don’t necessarily subscribe to “trends” we do find ourselves in the middle of quite a few. We’ve been carrying the Kenyan Jewelry Collection since launch, I guess we could say we’re ahead of the trend.

038_tjb11c.jpg

Here at Pangea Collection we love beautiful jewelry, jewelry that looks fantastic today and in ten years. It might happen that our Kenyan Jewelry Collection is super hot for Spring but we think it will still be hot whether it’s featured in a magazine or not (which it will be in June). We love cultural traditions not just because they’ve hit the runways but because they are reflections into this beautiful world we live in. We can also dream a little about an exotic land while proudly wearing a piece of cultural art.

kenyan-blood-orange-necklace.jpg

We too can hold our heads a little higher knowing that we’ve contributed to, in the case of the Kenyan Collection, artists who are part of a Fair Trade Organisation. And as an added bonus we’re not paying some of those crazy prices I’ve seen lately for an imitation of the authentic version. Pangea Collection’s Tribal Influence pieces range from $20 to $50.

Klong Toey

February 20, 2008

Klong Toey is a slum area in Bangkok which has existed since the 1950’s and is home to many rural migrants from Northern Thailand. These migrants arrived in Bangkok seeking employment.

As these migrants do not have legal rights to the land which they occupy they are under threat of eviction from authorities and do not have access to basic amenities such as water, electricity and sanitation. The residents of Klong Toey suffer from poverty and as a result of their living conditions, also health problems.

klong-toey.JPG

Pangea-Collection.com features the jewelry work from a small-scale income generation project involving Thai women and youth from the Klong Toey slums in Bangkok. These women and youth need supplementary income so they can afford to raise their children and send them to school. The jewelry that they craft is made using genuine silver and semi-precious stones.

Fashion Time Confusion

February 19, 2008

I don’t know about you but I find myself confused as to what season we’re in. Being in the fashion business, I have the opportunity to attend presentations on upcoming fashion trends and fashion weeks.

As you likely already know fashion weeks started with NYC and Canadian Fashion weeks are coming up in March (Toronto and Montreal) and April in Vancouver. The fashion lines being presented are for Fall/Winter 2008. In case you haven’t looked at a calendar lately we’re still in Fall/Winter 2007.

Go to any online or brick and mortar fashion store or pick up any fashion magazine and likely you’ll see all the new clothing, accessories and jewelry lines coming in for Spring/Summer 2008, it’s February and there’s still a whole lot of snow out here in the east!

So even if you can get your head around the fact that stores are bringing in the Spring/Summer fashions now in Jan/Feb (I too am promoting my spring/summer jewelry pieces at Pangea Collection). I attended a few weeks ago a forecast presentation for Spring/Summer 2009! That’s a year and a half ahead. Now to be fair it is intended for the designers who have to create, produce and then sell their products to stores. But for my brain, I’m getting a little confused about how to get dressed in the morning! So if you see me out on the street and I’m sporting a pair of riding style pants (which I’ve had in my closet since riding as a teenager), it just might be that I’m thinking of Spring/Summer 2009!

Enjoy the snow of Fall/Winter 2007, spring/summer will be here very soon with bright colours to brighten your day!

Cheers,
Patricia

Pleasures of Travel

February 18, 2008

Today I thought I’d write about some of the things I love so much about travelling.

Well I love pretty much everything about travelling.

I like the excitement of getting ready to go, the idea of discovering something new or rediscovering something I loved before if I’m returning to a destination.

I love the airport….
Watching all the people walk by. I like to look at their fashions, where might they be from, what’s their style, what looks great, what should never be worn, you get the idea.

I love the emotion at the airport, the goodbyes and the welcome home. I love the customs of the goodbyes and the welcome homes. I often get a little tear in my eye.

I love the business lounge. I read magazines that I don’t have delivered at home. I get a beverage and I watch more people. I relax in a comfy chair.

One thing I don’t love are the guys who just can’t stop shouting into their mobile phones for even one minute. On a recent trip to Europe with my husband, there was a guy who was shouting and walking laps around the lounge on his phone. Actually the whole thing was quite entertaining as we watched him and the reaction of the others in the lounge.

On the plane…
I love getting on the plane and getting seated. I like to have a conversation with the person next to me. You can meet the most interesting people on planes. I like the airline magazine and if I’m on a US flight, I have a good laugh at all the stuff that people actually might want to by from the SkyMall magazine. Do you really need all that stuff?

I like looking out the window to see how beautiful the land is from above. I like watching movies I haven’t seen, especially foreign films.

If in business class, I like when they address me by name and ask me if I’d like a glass of champagne, like I’d ever say no?

I like the anticipation of landing in another city.

At the destination airport…
I like that I don’t check luggage and I roll my carry on right out of there and get my way to my hotel.

I like looking at the airport on my way out, how is it organised, what language are the signs in, can I figure it out? Can I learn a few new words in another language.

On my way, whether taking a taxi or public transportation…
I like looking at the people and the outside (if you can see it). I like to look at the architecture.

At the hotel…
Once arrived, I love to get out of my clothes and put on a lovely terry robe! I like to look at all the local information that’s in the hotel and plan more details of my visit.

On the streets…
I like to wander out of the hotel (okay I put my clothes back on to do this). What is the area like, what are the restaurants like what are the shops like. How are the people.

I love to explore. Where are the best shops, restaurants, museums etc.

I love public transport (assuming it’s safe in that city) you feel much closer to the culture and it’s fun figuring out the transit system.

I love shopping and eating.

I love travel, I love everything about it but perhaps having to come home again.

Next trip…
Friday I am leaving to go to San Francisco for a week to spend with my husband. San Fran is such a lovely city, the nicest boutiques and friendliest shop owners of any city I have ever been. And well I’m looking forward to some amazing food!

Did I mention, I love to travel?

Cheers,
Patricia

Colour

February 12, 2008

Wow, can you believe that we are finally welcoming colour into our wardrobes!

You just have to take a look at the fashions on award shows in the last few weeks and see that colour is a key theme for Spring/Summer 2008 fashions.

While some of us have jobs which are more conservative in nature and don’t allow as much colour as we’d like or that we wear on the weekend so you can choose to add a burst of colour to your outfit with your accessories. Whether that’s with your shoes, handbag, belt or jewelry. A bright hit of colour can really brighten your look.

Big colours for spring include Orange (it is the colour)

but also Bright Pink, Yellow and Blue.

If you are interested in some jewelry accents of colour check out the Pangea Collection’s Caribbean Jewelry Collection, where colour is part of the culture.

Patricia

Top 10 Foods/Menu Items From Around The World

February 10, 2008

Top 10 (okay 11) foods/menu items from around the world
(excluding dessert, that deserves it own category)

1. Everything (almost) in Bangkok!

2. Tapas, Barcelona, especially the jamón Serrano (smoked ham) and pan con tomate (tomato paste on bread)

3. Goulash, Austria or Hungary
Yes it’s true I like this hearty meal, warms you up inside and out.

4. Naan with raisins and coconut, India
Okay I’ve never been to India, I had mine in London, England but you can find some pretty awesome Indian restaurants there.

5. Take out Fish and Chips, Victoria, BC, Canada or England
The fish and chips have to be served in newspaper soaked in malt vinegar and sprinkled with sea salt.

7. Rösti, Swiss Alps
Enjoyed for lunch when skiing, yep it’s heavy but it warms you up!

8. Cacahouettes (nuts) and Champagne! Anywhere in France, heck anywhere they serve it!

9. Chicken Tajine with almonds
For the real thing you need to go to Morocco but if you are like me, you haven’t been there yet so find your local Moroccan restaurant and savour one there until you can have the real thing. There are a good number of great Moroccain restaurants in Paris, and it use to be one of my favs.

11. Smoked meat sandwich with fresh cut fries dipped in mayo
If in Montreal find your way to Schwartz’s Deli, it’s an institution. If you are in the Laurentians, my favourite is Moe’s. Make it a Moe’s #3 please.
